Demos from Songwriters

Recently I just went through listening to another wave of song demos.  Corelli Music Group, along with Corelli's Music Box and My Angel's Songs publishing companies have been listed in the Songwriter's Market book since 1997.

Every year Writer's Digest sends me my listing in August and asks me to update it for the following year.  And every year I update it I double check to see if my guidelines are clearly printed.  Sure enough they are in my listing.  But, every week I get demos from songwriter after songwriter that don't come close to my guidelines.  So, last year, I decided to write a book that would help songwriters out.  The reason I wrote a book that costs money is because for years I gave out free advise to songwriters who basically weren't paying attention.  Not to mention that the guidelines I have in the Songwriter's Market book is free advise that songwriters still don't follow.

"The Songwriter's Guide to Submitting a Demo" is a small price to pay when you consider never hearing back from all the publishers a songwriter sends demos to.  If a songwriter sends out just 3 demos a month and they're all sent out incorrectly then they're throwing away money.  If they get this book for less then the same cost it would take to send out the 3 demos in just one month then a songwriter would increase their chances of hearing back from a publisher.

Here's a tip!  If a music professional asks to send a S.A.S.E. then send it.  If you don't you will not hear back from the publisher or record company.  S.A.S.E. means Self Addressed Stamped Envelope.  I can't tell you how many songwriters don't hear back from me because they don't send that S.A.S.E. but that's only part of it.  Get the book and learn how to send a better Demo to industry professionals.

Mistakes by Songwriters

I'm amazed at some or most of the songs I receive in demos from songwriters. A great many of them will send a song that they wrote and perhaps even recorded 20 years ago or more. It's very common for me to receive songs that have been written and recorded 30 years ago or more too.

Haven't these songwriters listened to the radio lately? You have to understand that if you're going to write a song that you want to submit to a publisher then the song MUST be what the publisher is looking for today. Unless you want to waist your time, the Postman and the Publisher's time and have nothing better to do than I guess it's okay.

But, if you're a songwriter who has found this blog, please make sure that when you send your material it's updated. Whether you're going to send it to Corelli's Music Box, BMI or My Angel's Songs, ASCAP or another publisher please have mercy.
